The story and how the COVID-19 has affected Hop Forged.
News was spreading faster than the virus in California. Corona Virus this...Corona Virus that. It was just another media hoax; at least, that's what I initially thought. WOW, were we wrong.
It was the week before St. Patrick's day, and it was a weird one. What would normally be a week full of fun, celebration, and generous amounts of libations, this one seemed to have a dark cloud looming about. I was afraid that all festivities would be cancelled in light of this Virus that was growing rapidly. Cases weren't going crazy in the US, but they were internationally. I thought, there is no way that this would get as severe here. Large gathering and festivals were being limited to less than 250 people and rapidly shrinking.
Everyone was together for one last Hoorah with green beer and Irish themed music. But it still didn't feel right.
Governor Newsom made an announcement that the COVID-19 virus has become a state of emergency. All social businesses should close after close of business Sunday March 15th to help reduce the spread of this "pandemic." What does this mean? It wasn't but minutes later that I received many emails from the California Craft Brewers Association explaining the situation and clarification. They were in contact with the Governors office and awaiting answers.
It was confirmed. We must close our doors as of close of business day that Sunday.
Monday rolls around and emails are still rapidly firing with what has been restricted and what has not. Clarification was also received that the Governor's announcement was only a "strong recommendation" and not a mandate. Luckily, breweries are a special breed. As a beverage manufacturer, small breweries have the ability to sell on-premise (in their tavern, beer garden, tap room, etc.), or off-promise (to-go, delivery, shipping, etc.) in a sealed container.
The industry was in for a rude awakening.
